John retired from the SIB - the Special Investigation Branch of the The Royal Military Police in 1988, having served in West Berlin and West Germany during the Cold War, Northern Ireland during the 'Troubles', and Belize after Independence.
On retiring from the SIB, John became a Commercial Yachtsman and opened a Sea School in the UK and Tenerife and regularly moved Sailing & Motor Yachts from the UK to the Canary Islands and to and from his second base in Palma de Mallorca. John has taught all levels of Yachtsman from Novice to Yachtmaster Ocean as well as Instructors.
Commercial Yachtsmen require training in the various safety issues affecting seamen, including Sea Survival, Radio procedure and First Aid. Although John instructed these, he still found himself on the Isle of Wight at the Fire Brigade Training Facility, wearing a Breathing Apparatus walking through a burning house with zero visibility.
As a member of the SIB, John investigated the complete range of criminal offences from serious Theft, Fraud, Rape & Murder, but also carrying out Special Investigations on behalf of HM Government. His vast experience of operations abroad, coupled with knowledge gained as a Commercial Yachtsman and Private Investigator, gives John background knowledge to write his novels, from experience.
